We began the session by making a pyramid. Jake pointed out that it was a square-based pyramid. Then we went on to make a cube. We realised we had the shapes to make basic houses! This evolved into making a city of houses, Shape City. Suddenly other city features appeared such as roads, stop signs, trees, birds in trees, erasers as cars and sharpeners formed into skate parks!

Numbers

We are really trying to get to know numbers. In partners, we can take turns at writing numbers in a counting pattern. Last week, some of us started at 2 and counted until past 100. Some of us started at 100 or 200, and counted backwards by 2s! Here is a photo of our number strips.

Writing a Sea Creature Narrative

This week we have been talking about narratives. Narratives are stories and we have been looking out for the introduction, problem and solution that is in most stories. Yesterday the children decided what the main character would be in their own narrative. They drew their character and gave it a name. Today they wrote a narrative about their character. They introduced their character in the first paragraph. In the second paragraph, each story told about a problem and in the last paragraph the problem was somehow solved. Well done on lots of creative thinking and writing in 1B! Here is Grace's narrative about Billie the Sea Jelly and Lucy's narrative about Shiler the Stonefish. Thanks Miss Downing for this fun and creative activity! Enjoy!

We practised careful handwriting by writing three sentences together about our Buckets. See the work of Indy and Connor here.

We Can Fill Buckets...

Today we read Fill A Bucket which is a lovely book that talks about how everyone has an invisible bucket (even our pets!). A bucket is easy to fill with good feelings. We talked about how filling someone else's bucket is easy and rewarding. The great feeling of helping someone else or being a good friend means that our own bucket is filled as well.

What is a sentence?

We are talking about capital letters and the times to use them, full stops, spaces between words and whether it makes sense! Also, even though sometimes we see it in books, it is not good writing to start a sentence with "and". Have a look at the activity we did earlier in the week about Bobby (you may have heard of our class mascot). Riley's work is here to show you. Then, we had a go at writing our own sentences about ourselves. See Chelsea's below. Everyone is working really hard in writing to have the correct punctuation. It is wonderful to see that so many students love to write.

Neat and Tidy!

I have already noticed that this class is extremely good at packing up after themselves and helping others to pack up quickly. It is so lovely to look at the lockers and see that nothing needs picking up! A big thank you to parents and past teachers for setting out the importance of this, and of course the students themselves for keep everything neat and tidy. Keep up the wonderful work 1B!
